The Coles Notes version....

I realize as I sign on, that the last post was Oct 14th. So here is a brief description of What's New with the Reinelt's.....

We were kindly invited to Cheryl and Jason's Halloween party this year and most of you know we went as Dog the Bounty hunter and Beth (his wife). Shortly there after the real Dog was outed for saying very bad things about his son's girlfriend. A similar incident happened a couple of years ago when Mark dressed up as the Scottish guy from the beer commercials....who was arrested very soon after for having inappropriate pictures on his computer. Hmmm, Mark and I have decided that we are no longer dressing up as famous people for any function of any kind.
We took a trip to Seattle on the 30th of November. We went to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. For all of you out there who enjoy Christmas carols and LOVE 80's hair band rock music, this is THE concert for you!! (I loved it). The trip home was in the ridiculous snow storm and there were some white knuckles on the steering wheel that night I can tell you.

WE (I) put the Christmas decorations up.....

And our next adventure took us to Leavenworth, WA on a bus tour with our very good friends, Conrad and Jo and 20 other passengers whose collective age totalled 1400. We had a great time and Leavenworth is beautiful. It's a small Bavarian (or as Donna called it -Barbarian) town overflowing with Christmas spirit. The Campbell's Resort Lodge in Lake Chelan is where we stayed and it was really nice.

The trip started with a stop at the duty free and then some shopping where the girls picked up sippy cups to hold the contents of what was bought at the duty free, and the boys picked up paper and pens for a new game we like to call "motion sickness pictionary" and recorders. Yes. Recorders. The recorder-off at the end of the night was somethin' else!!

My sides hurt from laughing, the conversations went from deep and thoughtful to stupid and ridiculous and everyone had a great time.

We love our friends Conrad and Jo. Mostly Jo.
And finally- I quit my job!! Too many reasons to list here as this is already too long, but I've started at a new place call Summit Chiropractic and after one part-time week, LOVE it. A very positive change for me and definitely in the direction I want to go. Focusing on proactive rather than reactive health care. Come on in anytime!!
So, that's all for now. Hopefully I'll be back before another 2 months go by.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

a little inspiration

The past couple weeks I've been trying to get up early and go for a walk.

Every morning I really don't feel like it.
Every morning the bed is so warm and comfy.
Every morning it's a chore to actually get out of bed.
However, once I'm outside...

There's no one else around,

There's a crisp breeze that wakes me up,

There's a different color on every tree,

And I say to myself, why didn't I do this yesterday?

Allow me to introduce myself...

My name is Cara Reinelt.

For those of you who know me well, my name is Cara Simpson Reinelt

For those of you who know me very well, my name is Cara Symonds Reinelt

and For those of you who know me better than anyone (mom) my name is Cara Simpson Symonds Simpson Reinelt (there is a story behind that, and in no way does it involve the law).

I like food.

A LOT

If I have a good day- I'll treat myself to something sweet because I've earned it.

If I have a bad day- I'll have some unhealthy (but very tasty) comfort food and then I'll have something sweet because I've earned it.

My favorite is any simple carbohydrate of any kind. If I could have a sandwich made of potato, rice, bread and pasta with a side order of popcorn...it would be a perfect day, and that would deserve another treat!!

Before leaving Germany, I made the very grave error of stepping in the scale.

The Result?

'nuf said.

Another thing about me...
I don't usually like drawing very personal attention to myself.
So this is how it's going to go...

ME?
I've decided to work really hard to not eat my potato, rice, pasta and popcorn sandwiches and lose 50lbs. (okay, just writing that number down and putting out there for the world - and I do mean world because I googled myself yesterday and I actually come up several times thanks to this blog - to see, makes me slightly nauseated).

YOU?
you won't mention any thing about it.

Just knowing that you know will be enough.

So there you go. Just before Thanksgiving and Halloween and Christmas, I've decided to swear off simple sugars and starch. I don't think that's the only swearing I'll be doing.

THANK YOU

We are at home now. Leaving Europe was very hard. The morning we left Italy I'll admit, I was a little bit surly-there would be no more gelato, no more foccacia, no more "Grazie's" or "Ciao's". Italy was so beautiful, colorful, educational, delicious and a home away from home. Everything is built into the mountains in the Cinque Terra and therefore, everything is either up or down. There were steps and hills all over the place (Terri you would have loved it). The houses were so colorful and everyones' laundry was hanging off their balcony-and when we did laundry, we did the same-although I cleverly hid my underpants on the row behind Marks shirts. The ocean was amazing and if you know me at all, you know how hard it was to leave that behind.

Leaving Germany was hard for different reasons. The difference was that Italy had amazing scenery, but Germany also has incredible history. The buildings and the architecture are something that if the opportunity to see, you should. Germany also has some of the greatest people that you will ever meet and I would like to say thank you to those people.

Thank you Alex, Andreas, Jannis, Heidi, Bernd, Franz, Sabine, Melly, Vitor, Heinz and Eva.
You let us stay with you and your home became our home. It was amazing to see some of you all in your country for a change and it was great to meet others for the first time. Mark and I are so lucky to have friends and family such as yourselves. Thank you for showing all that there was to see, driving us around endlessly, and doing things with us that you must have done a thousand time before.

There were three women in tears at the airport, and it is still sad to think that I won't see my new friends for another 2 years, but I want you all to know how much we love you all and appreciate everything you did. We hope that we will be able to repay you in 2009.
Love to all,
Mark and Cara

Worth the wait...

Mark and I hopped the train to Florence (Firenze) yesterday, to take the the 3 hour journey to the Academia that is home to Michelangelo's "David".

After sneaking into 1st class (which is worth it) and changing trains in Pisa, we arrived at about noon. At first I was not entirely impressed with Florence, there were so many people around and it was hard to get your bearings. Mark found our way with a free map from McDonalds which, by the way is where you can "taste the American breakfast" (egg mcmuffin and a hashbrown) between 6-11 a.m.

Thankfully, Mark had made reservations for the Academia over the Internet because the wait for people lined up down the street was about 3-4 blocks. As we walk in I wasn't prepared to blown away by the art and sculptures that were on display, but I was.

We walk around the corner and see magnificent paintings, art and figures in plaster and marble and out of the corner of my eye I see him. I feel goosebumps all over and there's a chill that wasn't due to the air conditioning. I can't look, I want to take in the other sculptures that Michelangelo had done first and give them the time it takes to truly appreciate the work that went into them. But then....

I look up and at the end of the gallery, under a dome shaped roof of windows stood David. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. As we walk around him, everything is perfect from the veins in his hands to the tendon behind his knee. Carved from one block of marble he makes an intimidating figure and if you look long enough, you could swear he was breathing. I cannot look any longer and as I start to cry I ask Mark if I can hide in his shirt so that I don't look like the crazy Canadian girl who appears to be having a miserable time in Italy. It was a one in a million experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

We get back on the train (no first class this time) and after, three hours, 2 transfers, and some chicken Mcnuggets, we arrive home.

6 hours of transit, 7 hours of walking and one amazing piece of marble carved to perfection.

Thank you Firenze.

Under the Ligurian sun

As we left Germany yesterday, I was sad to leave our new friends. We had been staying with Heidi, Bernd, Alexandra, Andreas and Jannis. These are some of the nicest people you will ever have the pleasure to meet. I was also sad to see that even almost halfway around the world, a problem such as graffiti is as common here and in Germany as it is at home.

Such outrageous words such as "HOMEWORK", "MUSTARD", and "SMILE" were spray painted across the walls of a playground in Germany and my personal Italian favorite, "LIVE THE DREAM!!". I guess problems are the same everywhere.

We arrived in Pisa last night and are now in Cinque Terra. The little bit of Italian I've learned has come in handy. We toured the leaning tower of Pisa and they aren't kidding-it really does lean. We went into the Cathedral behind the tower and I had forgotten that here, if you are entering a church, it is respectful to cover your shoulders. (I was wearing a sleeveless shirt) They have disposable "gowns" for women to wear and there are pictures of me looking like an escaped mental patient. Classy.

I should go now, it's getting late and I've haven't visited the other gelato store yet!!

Ciao!

The Euro"peeing" bathroom tour of 2007

ACHTUNG!! This blog entry is rated P.G. 13

I have seen some of the most amazing things over the last 6 days that I have been here....streets that are too small for 1 car but there are 30 on them, no speed limit, cathedrals that have taken 600 years to complete, but nothing compares to what I happened across yesterday afternoon.

As we sat down in a well known pub in Köln, I decided that I should use the washroom before the hour long train ride home (my mother always said - you should have gone before you left). What happened in that particular bathroom on that particular day needs to be shared. First I am shown to an empty stall by a lovely woman who enjoys her job way too much for someone who works in a pub bathroom, then I sit down to do what I came to do. As I stand up (my pants weren't even done up yet), a small square come out from the back of the wall behind the toilet and as the seat SPINS AROUND, it sprays, SANITIZES, and wipes the seat clean!!!!

The lady in the bathroom spoke no English, but didn't have to to know exactly how I felt about what I had just saw. Then I had to, of course, wash my hands. The hand dryer was made by Dyson, which as most of you know, makes the ultimate vacuum cleaner. They broke all the rules for making hand dryers. It looks like a large "U" and once you put your hands in, it sounds like a jet engine but works in about 8 seconds with not a drop of water left over!!

It was worth the train fare just for that experience. Don't even get me started on the toilet paper here. Let's just say that we had suitcase full of gifts coming over and I'm loading it up before I come home!!!

Tomorrow, we shall check out the bathrooms of Italy!!!

talk to you soon!!

HISTORY 101

I love Canada, I really do...but come on!! Do we have a wall that was built in 373??!! Well now I have a picture of one that was.

The town that we are in is called Wiesbaden and the reason that they have so many old buildings is because in WWII, the American soldiers liked it here so much they made it their headquarters and didn't bomb it as much as the surrounding towns. So many of the houses and churches are still standing from when they were first built.

Mark and I toured around Wiesbaden and Mainz yesterday and I was completely blown away with what I saw. The amazing care and craftsmanship that these buildings were assembled with is something that I have never seen. We were lucky enough to be walking through a large church yesterday just as a wedding ceremony started. The organ began playing and the choir stared singing and I got goosebumps. It was unreal.

Today we toured the Rhine river on a boat for 3 hours taking way too many pictures of about 20 castles that stand along the banks. We hopped off in a town called St. Goar and were able to walk through the Burg Rheinfels. (castle Reinfels). Again way too many pictures.

The people we are staying with are as amazing as their country-

Sabine- a wonderful hostess who can't do enough for you.

Franz- the best and most knowledgeable tour guide I've ever had.

Melanie-So easy going and even if she's seen it a thousand times before, will show you again without a word of complaint.

Ava-a sweet 82 year old lady that starts to cry when she thinks about Canada because she loves it so much and.....

Heinz- the perfect host who makes sure that your glass is never empty. doesn't actually drink very much himself, but loves to watch the Canadians try to do their best with peach schnapps, cherry schnapps, asbach schnapps, schlein schnapps.....all in the same night. You could ask Mark how he did but I'm not sure he remembers.

I'm still trying to figure out how to post pictures directly to the blog and not have to load them on the computer first, but alas everything is in German...

Have to run-we are on are way to Heidi and Bernd's for the next 3 nights and then off to Italy!!

Aufwiedersehen!!

we're here....

Well day one on our trip. I won't bore you with the details of everyday, but today was a first for many things.

The day started out with us coming back to our hotel from shopping to see two police cars arriving at the same time. Nothing serious, just a belligerent guy who overslept past check out and (successfully) stole all the towels in the room. Then it was on to the airport, where we found a very nice bulldog named George, who was also taking the flight with us.

We were able to waste 3 hours in the airport playing games, shopping, watching on TV how the German police had just caught a group of terrorists who had plans for the Frankfurt airport..... (don't worry Mom, everything is good now)

Our plane was delayed an hour which was good because just before the boarding call Marks' glasses broke and we had to make a mad dash for the jewelery store to find a tiny screwdriver!! Thank Goodness for duty free shopping!!!

On the plane everything went smoothly... I was worried due to the fact that Mark choose the chinese/curry/japanese combo from the airport for lunch, but if accidently eating the red wax off the babybel cheese didn't bother him, I guess nothing will. The flight was uneventful, but very long. We both didn't sleep very much and were INCREDIBLY tired when we got here.

It took only 7 minutes to break out the German chocolate and 28 minutes for the schnapps!!

Gotta run-we are heading into town to meet friends and pick up dinner!!

Miss and love everyone-talk to you again soon!!

Cara and Mark

This is our good friend Conrad. He came to stay with us recently.

I love it when he's here, Mark never laughs as hard or as much as when Conrad's around. The two of them are like beligerent 8-year-old kids. Which bring me to my point.

If you think that your 34-year-old husband is a grown-up and would no longer find fart jokes and noises to be the funniest thing in the universe...

you are SO wrong.

Where did the time go.

So there are only 13 days left before Mark and I are on a plane to Europe. If you are counting only days of work left before we leave Mark has 6 and I have 10. I'm not sure when or how this happened because just yesterday there was still 146 days to go.

That being said, I'm COMPLETELY not ready. The only thing that I am actively doing is, no longer putting my clothes away after doing the laundry. What if I forget the pink shirt that I really like? I'd better leave it out. The passports are already in the suitcase. (another story entirely-let's just say that once you've been in one apartment fire, anytime you smell something burning, you throw all you own into your new suitcase just to see "how much it can hold").

We have most of what we wanted to bring for gifts. Maple syrup, socks with the Canada flag on them, maple syrup, Canada t-shirts, maple syrup, clover honey, maple syrup....

Mark has everything planned out carefully for us. I LOVE him. I haven't had to do a thing. He's booked tickets online for us to go the museum in Florence where Michelangelo's David in on display and he's read everything we'll need to know while we're there.

We'll be posting online about where we are and what we're doing, mostly here, but on facebook as well. If I can, I'll try to get some pictures posted.

I should probably go and take out our wedding pictures out of the suitcase.

Excuse me while I rant...

OK, first let me tell you that I already know that I'm going to sound like both my Mother and my Father...

There is no work shortage in Kelowna and I understand that people really have to struggle to find employees who want to work in retail, fast food, gas stations etc...Which are not glamorous jobs, I'm sure, but jobs none the less.

This is the problem that I have....Where is the service in this customer service industry??? I recently was at the mall with a friend and we stopped for lunch. I placed my order and when what I received was not at all what I asked for, I was told, "Oh, we made a mistake - you need to pay more". Pardon me???

As we made our way through the shops on that rainy day, we saw and heard so many stories like -last nights party-the fact that Jesse no longer likes Brianne-and what is going to happen when Julie finds out? In one particular store, we stood there waiting for someone to acknowledge our presence and saw all 4 employees (one wasn't even working-he just stopped in to chat - how nice) ignore the fact that we were there, ready and more than willing to throw some cold hard cash their way. Silly me, I thought they worked on commission.

Stop me if I'm going to far....

I had to actually ask the girls, sorry - Baristas, at Starbucks last week if I could interrupt their conversation about how the medication the the lovely dark haired girl had been given for her strep throat was o.k. because she could still drink while taking it. (In case you're wondering, it all turned out OK because her ex was going to be at the same party and she really shouldn't drink around him anyway.)

I don't think that I'm being unreasonable...all I ask for is the following:
  • acknowledge me sooner rather than when you feel like it, as I may be on lunch or in a hurry
  • say please when you ask me for my money, I'm positive that I've worked my tail off for it and I know that I said please when I asked for your help.
  • "thank you" goes farther than you could possible know.

That being said, I think that I will go, curl up with a good book, some chamomile tea and stay away from anyone being paid to "help me".

Thank you.

The Letter(s)

Dear XXXXXX
I would like to appologize for my behavior on May 29, 2007 that led to you "having" to call my wife. What I did was irresponsible, juvenile and did not show you the respect you deserve.
When I am at work I am paid to perform certain duties and should do so in a mature, prompt fashion. Not in the fashion that I did on May 29th, 2007.
I still have not been able to watch television, play Playstation, use the Internet or even go looking at bikes.
I hope that this letter shows you that I am truly sorry for the disrespect that I showed you, and I will endeavor to perform to the best of my abilities in the future.
Sincerely yours,
Mark.

P.S. you are a poophead.

Dear Cara:
I am sorry that you were taken away from your work on May 29th, to have to deal with a phone call from my supervisor in regards to my lack of work ethic, and my poor behaviour at work.
I am sorry for this.
While I am at it there are some other things I should clear the air about
1) I am sorry I shrunk some of your clothes in the dryer.
2) I am sorry I don't always pass along phone messages.
3) I am sorry I drank all the milk and just put water in the jug.
4) I am sorry that while you are sleeping, I make faces at you.
5) I am sorry that I got you to sign a form to have our last name legally changed to "Awesome" without you knowing.
6) I am sorry that I used your good scrapbooking scissors to cut popcans open when i had a really good idea for Christmas tree decorations. (It didn't work as well as I thought)
7) I am sorry that while you are at work I let stray dogs into the apartment and dress them up in your clothes.
So really when you think about it, getting a phone call from my work is not that bad. I will try not to let it happen again, but lets keep things in perspective.
Sincerely yours
Mark Awesome

p.s. you are not a poophead.

The Call

I got the call today.
At Work.
For the parents out there, it's the call that you get from the principal.
For me, it's from my husbands' boss.....

"Hi Cara, It's Camille."

"Hi Camille."

"Mark's misbehaving and he won't listen to me, so I told him I was calling you."

"Frankly, Camille, I've been expecting this call for the last 10 years. Please tell him to settle down and get back work. I don't want to have to haul my butt down there. And can you please tell him that his privileges have now been taken away. No T.V., No PlayStation, and no bike."

"No, bike?", says Mark in the background, "I don't have a bike."

"I know, and now you can't have one".

"Thanks, Cara"
"No problem Camille. have a good day."

Apparently he was at work and was making faces at his superiors when they asked him to complete his tasks.

Mark and I had a little chat about responsibility after work today, so there will no more calls.
Although, I couldn't see what he was doing behind my back as I walked away.

I sat and watched the last 1/2hr. of my soap opera today and I got to thinkin'....

When are my half-twin sister, (who I thought was dead in a fiery car crash, but has had plastic surgery so she no longer looks like me but strongly resembles our mother, who is secretly our aunt) and her husband (my ex-husband, who we once thought was our brother) going "pop-in" for a visit?

My life is so boring.

P.S. Mark wanted me to let you all know that he is STILL pushing for me for the name change of the blog to "Kenny Bloggins Blog Cabin".
(sorry honey, not gonna happen!)

The List

Mark and I had an adventure in not-so-fine-dining yesterday after a spontaneous decision to go for a late lunch.

2:38 arrived at restaurant
2:44 seated
2:52 drink order taken
2:57 wrong drinks arrive
3:05 order placed-we both ordered the personal pizza package (salad, small pizza, chocolate
mousse).
informed menu is actually wrong.
placed appetizer order
3:22 salads show up - no forks
3:30 no appetizer or lunch yet
3:35 after asking if we could have more salad, we received the family size salad bowl
with a pair of tongs no plates.
3:45 " it'll just be few more minutes guys, your first pizzas were burnt"
3:50 food shows up. (my pizza was really, very good)
3:52 two new plates of salad that we didn't order are placed at the table along with the following
comment, " I guess they really want to fill you two up!!" (At this point we asked to cancel
our non-existent appetizer.)
4:00 to maintain consistency, our server asked if we would like to order dessert or "sumpin".
(refer back to 3:05 when dessert was actually ordered)
4:20 when asked if we could use the 5$ coupons we received for the experience so far, it was
unclear - "I don't think we can because the coupons take 24hrs to go into the system."

Thus, Mark and I have started a list. We went to Wal-Mart and bought a whiteboard for the fridge and started the "Things That Are Dead To Us" list.

Sorry East Side Mario's. You are right at the top.

a history

12:45AM.

Nope, not watching Saturday Night Live.....

No late night pillow talk with my husband...

FACEBOOK.

When I saw mysisterDawn's blog, I thought what a good idea for Mark and I when we go away. Everyone can check in with us when were in Germany and Italy. We can post pictures, explain where we are and what we saw. I didn't tell anyone at first because I know me and computers and I wanted to see if was something I would keep up with. I do enjoy it.

Thank you Dawn.

I have some friends who then joined facebook. I went, I saw, I never fully understood.

Mark and I went to the Kerns last night for games and after being told never, under no circumstances should I ever go to facebook due to it's addictive nature, mysisterDawn helps sign me up and show me all the features there are to this phenomenon.

12:45AM

Thank you mysisterdealerDawn.

What if?

So I think that Mark and I have a plan, but I need to ask a question. Would anyone be terribly upset if we didn't come back from Italy? I see these pictures, hear the language, and read about the food and I wonder, what if we just stayed there? Our first Italian lesson went well, we know how to count to 20 and inform anyone we talk to that we are pleased to have met them. It is very similar to Spanish and I easily get confused between the two.
We got our new camera on Tuesday and I love it!! Our old one was good but, come on, this is Italy. I don't want to return with "just alright" pictures of the tower of Pisa.
As you can see the terrain is somewhat vertical so I going to go now and see if I can improve my cardiovascular fitness just a bit before we go so I don't have to use the following phrase, "per favore, chiami un dottore".
(please call a doctor)
Have a great day.

Buon giorno!

So, Italian lessons start tonight!!! I really feel that I am ahead of the curve thanks to the Italian phrase book and CD that I have in the car. I know all the key phrases such as "where is the bus stop?", "where is the bank machine?" and "I would like a room with a bathroom". These are all very important to a fun and hygienic vacation. I have to go now and meet my husband with his snack so we can walk to school.

Talk soon.

come fly with me, come fly, let's fly away....

We have Tickets!!
Sort of. Mark bought the tickets over the phone, but I've come up with what I think is a pretty good replica of what the ticket would actually look like.

The purchase took place Tuesday night between a lovely man who could not speak German and another lovely gent who could not speak English.

The result:

Herr Reinhold and Cara Reinhold of 1680 Burgth road Kolowa will be going to Germany on the 5th of September on a Boeing 767 (which according to the non-English speaking chap, is a very good plane).

All the necessary corrections have been made and our flight to Italy is being taken care of as well, so I guess we are almost all set.

Can't wait!!
Ciao

Cara and Mark?

For those of you who are wondering if Mark will ever post anything, I'm sorry to tell you that he won't.

The simple reason is this; I refused to name our blog "Kenny Bloggins" after the '80's superstar Kenny Loggins. While I realize that Kenny did sing some of the best soundtrack music of his day (Top Gun, Footloose & Caddyshack) I had to draw the line somewhere.

il dolce far niente, the sweetness of doing nothing

As I sign my husband and I up for Italian lessons I can't help but picture how it's going to go...
I know that I cannot speak a foreign language, Mark does not. I see a lot of hand movements re-runs of The Sopranos and watching of the Godfather-all three parts. This is where he and I are different. He literally throws himself into the situation and could easily pass for, not necessarily a local, but definitely someone who's been there awhile. This is something I envy and love about him. I, on the other hand, prefer to sit back and enjoy the differences between where I'm from and where I am. Either way this is an anticipated vacation (can you tell?) which will be enjoyed. In the meantime, however, I have asked him to no longer refer to me as his wife but as his consigliere.
Ciao!

I will continue to wait....

Another sleepless night

only 6 more months 'till Italy, and I have one sleep deprived husband. He woke up the other morning stating that he couldn't sleep because he was thinking of Italy....
We will be staying in Germany for week with friends of ours, who live Wiesbadan, visit the chocolate museum (that's right-chocolate museum) and then it's on to Italy.
The first night there we will be in Pisa and then we travel by train to Riomaggiore, which is part of the Cinque Terra.
My lovin' husband and I have had extensive discussions regarding "comfortable" shoes and fanny packs. I afraid I will not budge on this- NO FANNY PACKS ALLOWED!! We are still trying to compromise on the shoes. When I try to picture these "comfortable shoes" I picture my Grandma (bless her heart) and am conflicted between my somewhat limited sense of fashion and the knowledge that if I do pick the wrong shoes, my husband WILL leave me behind....
I'll let you know how it goes...
